What is a Battery Management System(BMS)?

A Battery Management System (BMS) is a specialized technology designed to supervise a battery pack. The battery pack is composed of battery cells organized in a matrix configuration of rows and columns, ensuring the ability to provide the targeted voltage and current over a period of time in anticipated load scenarios.

The supervision provided by BMS typically includes:

Battery capacity monitoring: BMS can monitor the voltage, current, temperature and other parameters of each battery pack, and calculate the capacity of the entire battery pack to understand the actual usage status of the energy storage system.

Remote: BMS can remotely monitor and control the energy storage system, such as charging current control and power output adjustment of the battery pack, remote shutdown, fault diagnosis and data transmission of the energy storage system.

Fault warning and protection: BMS can monitor the status of the battery pack and provide real-time feedback, as well as predict the possibility of operational failures, so as to provide early warning and take timely response measures. At the same time, BMS can also implement intermittent protection of the battery pack, such as overcharge, over-discharge, and over-temperature, etc., thereby ensuring the safe and stable operation of the battery pack.

Optimize battery consumption: BMS can optimize battery usage efficiency and extend battery consumption, for example, by dynamically balancing the charge state of the battery to reduce the loss of the entire battery pack and increase the lifespan.

We can almost say that BMS is the core of the new energy industry. Whether it is an EV, an energy storage power station, or a base station power supply, batteries are energy storage components. The perception, decision-making and execution of the battery constitute the entire energy storage control system. As an extremely important sensing component, the BMS is the core foundation of the energy storage system and an important basis for EMS decision-making and PCS execution.
