Last month, Tesla officially announced the switch of all standard range (entry-level) versions of its cars to the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry globally.
Lithium iron phosphate battery refers to the lithium-ion battery with lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material. The Dowell IPACK series of home batteries also use ATL's LFP cell, which is superior to similar lithium batteries on the market.
So what are the advantages of LFP batteries over other batteries?
High security.
The structure is stable during charging and discharging, and it is not easy to explode even at high temperatures or overcharge. Compared with the ternary lithium battery, its safety is greatly improved.
Long cycle life
Dowell's IPACK series home battery can reach 6000 cycles, and the service life can reach 10-15 years.
High-temperature resistance
LFP batteries perform well under high-temperature conditions, with a wide operating temperature range (-20C--+75C). And it can withstand high temperatures of 350°C to 500°C, while lithium manganate/lithium cobalt oxide is usually only 200° C around.
Large capacity and lightweight
The mainstream LFP batteries on the market have an energy density of more than 90WH/kg, while the energy density of lead-acid batteries is about 40WH/kg. Moreover, A LFP battery of the same size is only two-thirds the size and one-third the weight of a lead-acid battery.
Environmental protection
LFP battery does not contain any heavy metals or rare metals. Non-toxic (SGS certified), non-polluting, in line with European RoHS regulations.
Fast charge capability
The start-up current of the lithium iron phosphate battery can reach 2C, which can realize high-rate charging. The current of lead-acid batteries is between 0.1C and 0.2C, which cannot meet the requirements for fast charging.
Low maintenance cost
LFP batteries can extend their service life without active maintenance. Batteries have no memory effect, and because of the low self-discharge rate (<3% per month), you can store them for longer periods.
